New UTC Relies on Vulcathene

Vulcathene chemical drainage pipework has been integral to a major £12m project to construct a new University Technical College (UTC) on Gloucestershire Science and Technology Park.

A 6,000m2 facility, SGS Berkley Green UTC provides specialist education to learners aged 14 – 18 in digital technology, cyber security and advanced engineering. As part of the build, five new laboratories were constructed, with main M&E contractor, Avon Combined Electrical Services Ltd (ACES), working in partnership with Cosgrove and Drew Engineering Services Ltd (CDE Services), being tasked with installing a reliable chemical drainage system.

ACES and CDE Services selected our complete Vulcathene Enfusion system, including pipework, fittings, waste and bottle traps, due to the system’s proven track record in education environments. Vulcathene in 102mm was fitted for the risers, with the run outs to the sinks completed in 51mm pipe. The Vulcathene system transports chemical waste from the sinks in each laboratory, to the building’s main drainage system for disposal off site.

The timescale was crucial for this project, as the fit out needed to be completed for the start of the new term so delays were simply not an option. The lightweight nature of Vulcathene, which enables ease of handling on site, combined with the quick and simple installation process, helped reduce installation time on site.

Commenting on the project, Neil Price from Cosgrove and Drew Engineering Services, said: “Safety is always the first priority in any new education development, which is why Vulcathene was specified as a proven solution. For us as installers, it was hassle-free to fit Vulcathene, with Durapipe’s technical team being on hand for practical training and advice throughout the project.”

Experiments in science laboratories often lead to unknown combinations of chemicals being created, therefore it is imperative that the drainage system can safely transport any chemical concoctions. Vulcathene offers educational establishments the reassurance that it has a proven pedigree over many decades in dealing with all manner of chemical waste cocktails from laboratories across the world.

Available in sizes from 38mm – 152mm, Vulcathene is a purpose designed chemical drainage system available in two easy jointing methods; Mechanical for demountable joints and Enfusion for welded joints, offering complete flexibility for designers and installers of chemical waste systems.
