A trio of pipework solutions has been installed as part of a nursing home development, Alexandra Place, in Reading.
The new-build project is a modern development of 64 apartments providing high-quality homes for older people with varying needs. In addition to the living accommodation, Alexandra Place will also boast an exercise room, hair salon, cafe, therapy suite and activity areas, creating opportunities for residents to socialise with the local community.
As part of the project, a reliable pipework system was needed to distribute chilled water throughout the development. Mechanical services company IDC Southern turned to our metric ABS system, Durapipe SuperFLO as the ideal solution due to its performance characteristics and ease of installation.
Durapipe SuperFLO in sizes up to 90mm was specified to transport chilled water from the boiler to the flats, and due to its lightweight nature, was much easier to handle on site than metal alternatives, reducing the labour time for the project.
The hot water from the central boiler was piped to each of the individual flats using Durapipe’s PVC-C system. The pipework, in sizes 20mm – 80mm, was specified due to its high performance properties.
Completing the treble, IDC Southern also specified Friaphon to handle the soil waste water drainage requirements for the development in sizes up to 110mm. Minimising noise from drainage applications is key to creating a comfortable environment for residents, so a sound reducing drainage system was an important factor when considering products.
Commenting on the project, Tony Wright, mechanical director at IDC Southern, said: “The lightweight properties of Durapipe SuperFLO and the Durapipe PVC-C made installation much easier and quicker than other metal alternatives, saving considerable labour time and costs.
“It was also important that we created a peaceful and calming environment for residents, so using Friaphon ensured all drainage acoustics were kept to an absolute minimum while reducing labour time during installation as additional lagging is not required.”
Durapipe SuperFLO is specially designed to cater for chilled or boosted cold water applications within the building services sector and offers many added benefits; the system is completely limescale and corrosion resistant due its smooth inner-bore and offers a 50-year design life.
Durapipe’s PVC-C system for hot and cold water is both limescale and corrosion resistant, offering a 50 year design life. The speed of installation and the fact that no power source or ‘hot works’ are needed means that PVC-C offers significant benefits when compared with copper and steel alternatives.
Friaphon is a purpose designed pipework system with a proven track record of delivering outstanding noise reduction results, dramatically reducing drainage noise. It is also a lower installed cost alternative to cast iron as it does not need to be lagged, and combining this with its push fit assembly, makes the installation process quicker and easier.
