Durapipe helps secure a bright future for Knowsley Schools

A host of plastic pipework has been installed as part of the major £163 million Knowsley BSF (Building Schools for the Future) programme.

The Knowsley project was an ambitious development to transform Knowsley’s education system by constructing seven new state-of-the-art learning centres to replace the 10 existing secondary schools.

Main contractor Balfour Beatty was looking for a pipework manufacturer that could provide systems to meet several application requirements across all seven learning centres and so turned to Durapipe UK, and specifically, our Friaphon and Vulcathene pipework systems.

Friaphon was specified in sizes up to 110mm for all of the rainwater drainage requirements across the seven schools due to its acoustic properties. Minimising noise from drainage applications is key to creating a comfortable and stimulating learning environment, so this was an important factor when considering products.

Friaphon is a purpose designed pipework system with a proven track record of delivering outstanding noise reduction results, dramatically reducing drainage noise for the learning centres. It is also a lower installed cost alternative to cast iron as it does not need to be lagged, and combining this with its push fit assembly, makes the installation process quicker and easier – making it the ideal choice for Balfour Beatty.

As part of the development, the Vulcathene mechanical pipework system in sizes up to 50mm has also been installed for the chemical drainage requirements of all of the science laboratories within each of the learning centres.

The market leading product was specified due to its proven track record for chemical drainage, as Vulcathene is the market leader in chemical drainage pipework and is the only product that has passed the test of time in terms of safely conveying chemical waste.

Commenting on the pipework selection, Jason Whitfield from Balfour Beatty said: “We had very specific requirements for the pipework systems so we needed products that were purpose designed for each individual application.

“Durapipe UK offered us just that and in addition to the high performance properties and proven reliability of both Friaphon and Vulcathene, the products offered us many advantages during the installation process. The lightweight nature of the products, combined with the quick and easy jointing technique saved us considerable labour time and costs.”
