SuperFLO keeps vital data cool

Durapipe SuperFLO pipework has been chosen as a simple solution for the refurbishment of a key data centre in Milton Keynes.

Originally purpose-built for a leading European bank last year, the building needed a complete overhaul and refit of all the interior and exterior systems for the new owners – a principal data group that specialises in the provision of high quality IT solutions including rackspace, data suites, IP networks, dedicated servers and technical services.

The refurbishment has seen the Milton Keynes site become one of the very few carrier neutral data centres in the UK, providing 25,000 square foot of space. As part of the project, contractor cfes Ltd was tasked with designing and installing a new cooling system, using close control technology to precisely control the ambient temperature of the environment containing the rack storage systems within the two data floors. Each rack storage system and its computer processing unit exudes a high level of heat so requires a well designed, efficient and reliable cooling system that can maintain a consistent temperature of the room 24/7, in order to maximise the performance of the equipment and avoid any overheating.

cfes Ltd specified Durapipe SuperFLO pipework in sizes up to 225mm to transport chilled water from the 1MW central chiller plant to a network of 125kW close control downflow units situated within each data floor. Durapipe SuperFLO pipework was the perfect choice for the contractor, as its capability to remain tough and durable at temperatures as low as -40°C will ensure the system stays cool.

John Davies, Operations Manager at cfes Ltd, commented: “This data centre project called for a reliable and durable pipework solution. Site constraints and the fast track nature of the programme precluded the use of conventional steel piping systems. The simple solvent welding jointing technique of Durapipe SuperFLO offered the ideal solution for all our needs, providing significant time and cost savings throughout the installation process. As a company we were relatively new to the use of the SuperFLO system, throughout the installation process we continued to receive excellent on and off-site technical support from Durapipe UK which ensured a successful and timely project completion.”

Durapipe SuperFLO is specially designed to cater for chilled or boosted cold water applications within the building services sector and offers many added benefits; the system is completely limescale and corrosion resistant due its smooth inner-bore and offers a 50-year design life.
