Top marks at Nottingham University

A selection pipework systems have been specified for a state-of-the-art expansion of the University of Nottingham’s Centre for Biomolecular Sciences.

The Centre for Biomolecular Sciences is the University’s largest scientific research centre of excellence. Following the new extension, the centre will house over 300 researchers from seven major research groups to develop innovative new techniques for a range of medical and scientific disciplines.

Vulcathene chemical drainage has been installed to meet the complex and varied chemical waste requirements of the research laboratories. The Friaphon sound attenuated drainage system has also been specified for internal drainage in sensitive areas. Both pipework options were specified by consulting engineers, Max Fordham, due to each of the systems offering the ability to cater for the specific requirements of the university.

Commenting on the specification details, Jeremy Bickerstaffe, Job Engineer for Max Fordham said: “We were tasked with specifying pipework systems for the laboratories and offices in the Centre for Biomolecular Sciences, both of which demanded very specific requirements. The Vulcathene system provided the ideal solution for the laboratories due to its durability and resistance to a wide range of chemicals and Friaphon’s built in sound insulation properties offered a complete solution to reducing drainage noise problems.”

The Centre for Biomolecular Sciences represents a £25 million investment by the University of Nottingham which brings together world class, multidisciplinary research teams under one roof.
